Signs & Symptoms of Alcohol Addiction
Alcohol use disorder isn’t defined by how far person has fallen, it’s defined by whether alcohol has taken control of choices person would otherwise make differently. That includes people who:
- Still go to work every day, but are managing a hangover or a craving to get through it
- Have never had legal trouble, but have started hiding how much they drink from a partner or family
- Have tried “just cutting back” multiple times and keep landing back in the same place
- Use alcohol specifically to turn off anxiety, numb grief, or get to sleep
- Are more afraid of what treatment will look like than of what drinking is doing to them
Why Alcohol and Mental Health Are Treated Together
For many clients, drinking isn’t the whole story. It’s connected to something underneath that’s been harder to name.
- Often Shows Up Alongside Alcohol Use
- Anxiety and panic
- Depression
- Grief and unresolved loss
- Trauma and PTSD
- Chronic stress or burnout
Treating the drinking without treating what’s underneath it tends to leave people vulnerable to relapse. Every plan starts with your full clinical picture, not just a substance checklist.

Types of Therapies We Use for Alcoholism Treatment in North Hollywood
“Therapy” can mean a lot of different things, so here’s what’s actually used and why it matters for drinking specifically:
Individual therapy
One-on-one sessions with your primary therapist to work through what’s personal to your situation, not just what applies to the group.
Group therapy
Structured peer sessions, not open-mic sharing, led by a clinician, focused on specific skills and shared experience with others working through similar drinking patterns.
Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT)
CBT helps identify the specific thoughts and situations that trigger drinking (a bad day at work, a fight with a partner, being alone at night) and builds different responses to those moments before they turn into a drink.
Dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT)
DBT focuses on tolerating intense emotions and urges without acting on them, which is often the actual skill missing when someone says “I know I shouldn’t, but I do it anyway.”
Trauma-informed care
For clients where drinking developed as a way to manage a specific past event or ongoing trauma, treatment addresses that underlying experience rather than only the drinking behavior on top of it.
Family therapy
When appropriate and with your consent, sessions that help a partner or family member understand what’s actually helpful vs. harmful support during recovery.
Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT)
For clients already prescribed medication to reduce cravings or support sobriety (such as naltrexone or acamprosate), your therapy team coordinates with your prescribing physician so medication and therapy work together.
Relapse Prevention Planning
Identifying your specific high-risk situations (holidays, certain social settings, stress at work) and building a concrete plan for each, rather than a generic “just don’t drink” instruction.
Yoga Therapy
Offered as a complementary practice alongside clinical treatment, not a replacement for it, to help with stress regulation, body awareness, and managing the physical tension that often accompanies cravings and early recovery.
Art and Music Therapy
Creative, expressive sessions used alongside individual and group work, giving clients another way to process emotions and experiences that can be harder to put directly into words. Like yoga, these are offered as a complement to core clinical treatment, not a substitute for it.
A Note on Medical Safety: Alcohol Withdrawal Can Be Dangerous
Stopping alcohol suddenly after heavy or prolonged use can be medically dangerous, and in some cases life-threatening. Symptoms can include seizures, hallucinations, and a condition called delirium tremens.
MindSpace provides outpatient treatment (PHP and IOP). We do not provide onsite medical detox. During your intake assessment, we screen for withdrawal risk. If you need medically supervised detox first, we’ll help connect you to an appropriate facility, and you can step into PHP or IOP with us as soon as you’re medically stable.
If you or someone else is currently in acute withdrawal (confusion, seizures, hallucinations, severe shaking), this is a medical emergency. Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room.
What Sets Our Alcohol Program Apart
- Every clinician holds a California state license, not just industry certifications. You’re working with a licensed therapist from your first session, not a case manager or intake coordinator standing in for one.
- Dual diagnosis is the default assessment, not an upsell. Anxiety, depression, grief, trauma, and chronic stress get evaluated alongside your drinking from day one, so your plan addresses what’s underneath the alcohol use, not just the alcohol use itself.
- Your plan is built from your assessment, not pulled from a curriculum. Which therapies you get (CBT, DBT, trauma-informed care, MAT, and the rest) and how much of each depends on your history, not a fixed program every client runs through in the same order.
- PHP and IOP both offer daytime and evening groups, and admissions will talk through your actual schedule, including shift work or a schedule that might change mid-program, before you commit to a start date.
- Admissions is a conversation, not a sales pitch. No pressure to commit on the first call, no requirement to have it all figured out or be fully honest about your drinking on day one.
- HIPAA protection starts at your first call, not once you’re enrolled. We don’t contact employers, and nothing goes to family without your written consent.

What Happens When You Call or Us
1. Make the call
Call (818) 528-4170 for a confidential, no-pressure conversation. No referral needed, and no obligation to commit to anything on this call. This is where you can ask the questions that are actually holding you back, privacy concerns, insurance questions, scheduling constraints, whatever it is, before you decide anything.
2. Complete Clinical Assessment
This covers your drinking history, withdrawal risk, and any co-occurring concerns like anxiety, depression, or trauma. You don't need to have it all figured out on day one; the assessment starts a conversation, and your plan adjusts as your team learns more. If withdrawal risk shows up, your team will help connect you to medical detox before you start PHP or IOP.
3. Insurance Verification
Most major insurance plans are accepted. If you're on a shared family plan and privacy from the policyholder is a concern, raise it here; admissions can walk through how your specific insurer handles claim notifications. Sliding scale fees and payment plans are available if you're uninsured. (MindSpace does not accept Medicare or Medi-Cal.)
4. Get Matched to a Level of Care
Based on your assessment, you and your clinical team decide between PHP or IOP, whichever fits your current stability and how much daily structure you need. This is also where you talk through practical fit: your work schedule, shift patterns, or whether a fixed schedule genuinely works for your life.
5. Begin Treatment
Start with individual sessions with your primary therapist, then move into the group and specialty therapies (CBT, DBT, trauma-informed care, family therapy, MAT, and others) that your assessment points to. Your plan isn't fixed; it's built around your actual life, and it can be adjusted as things change.

FAQs on Alcohol Addiction Treatment in North Hollywood
Treatment here is clinical and therapy-based (CBT, DBT, trauma-informed care), not mandated step-work. Let your team know your preference either way.
MindSpace works with adults. If you're seeking care for a minor or an older family member with additional medical needs, ask admissions directly, since age range and any age-related program adjustments should be confirmed before you commit to a start date.
Family therapy sessions can be arranged with your consent, but ask admissions whether a family member can be present for your intake or an early session, since in-person family involvement policies vary by program.
