What Is Intensive Outpatient Program

An IOP is a structured treatment program that runs 3 to 5 days per week, for around 3 hours per session. You attend scheduled sessions at our North Hollywood clinic, for mental health, substance use, or both, then return home each evening.

IOP is the right level of care when you need more support than weekly therapy can offer, but your situation does not require full-day treatment or residential care.

At MindSpace, your sessions include individual therapy, group therapy, medication management when needed, and practical skills you can apply immediately in daily life. Your treatment plan is built around your diagnosis, schedule, and goals, not a standard programme applied to everyone.

What many people notice before reaching out about IOP

Many people reach a point where weekly therapy no longer feels like enough. You may still be managing day to day, but something feels harder than it used to.

IOP may be the right step if you or your beloved one:

  • Feel like you’re getting by, but not actually getting better
  • Notice anxiety, depression, or substance use affecting your work or relationships
  • Have tried weekly therapy before but didn’t see lasting results
  • Are stepping down from PHP or residential care and need continued structure
  • Are managing both a mental health condition and substance use at the same time
  • Want real support, but can’t step away from work, school, or family

IOP vs PHP vs OP

Each option, from Residential Treatment to Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHP), Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP), and standard outpatient therapy, offers a different level of structure and support. The comparison below highlights how these levels differ in intensity, schedule, and who they are best suited for, helping individuals and families make informed treatment decisions.

Level of Care Schedule / Duration Intensity Best For
Residential Treatment 24/7 supervised care Highest Individuals needing medical detox, immediate safety, or intensive monitoring
Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) 5–6 days/week, ~6 hours/day High More intensive treatment, often a step-down from inpatient care
Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) 3–5 days/week, ~3 hours/day Moderate Structured care while maintaining work, school, or daily responsibilities
Standard Outpatient Therapy Weekly sessions Low Ongoing maintenance; may not provide enough structure for persistent symptoms

Therapies Used in Our IOP

Our sessions draw on a range of evidence-based approaches, selected based on each person’s diagnosis and treatment goals, to make the IOP results consisten.

Individual therapy

One-on-one sessions with your primary therapist to work through personal challenges, track progress, and adjust your plan as you move forward.

Facilitated group sessions where you build skills alongside peers who understand what you are going through. Group work builds perspective, accountability, and connection.

CBT helps you identify the thought patterns and behaviours that are making things harder, and replace them with more effective ones.

DBT focuses on emotional regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal effectiveness, particularly useful for those managing intense emotions or co-occurring conditions.

For clients with a trauma history, sessions are delivered with a trauma-sensitive approach that prioritises safety and avoids re-traumatisation.

When clinically appropriate and with your consent, we involve family members to improve communication and strengthen your support system.

If medication is part of your care plan, our clinical team coordinates with prescribers to ensure it is safely integrated with your therapy.

Why Our IOP Program Can Help You

Many people choose MindSpace because they want support that actually fits into their life, not treatment that takes them away from it. Our program is built to help you stay stable, learn realistic coping skills, and receive consistent guidance from a team that understands what you are going through.

Personalized Treatment That Matches Your Needs

Your treatment plan is created around your goals, history, symptoms, and lifestyle. Whether you are dealing with anxiety, depression, trauma, substance use, or dual diagnosis, your care team puts together a plan that makes sense for where you are right now.

Licensed Clinicians You Can Trust

You work with therapists, case managers, and psychiatric providers who specialize in mental health and co-occurring disorders. They guide you step-by-step, help you understand your symptoms, and give you tools you can use immediately.

Real-World Skills You Can Apply Right Away

Our sessions focus on practical skills, not theory. You learn how to manage stress, regulate emotions, set boundaries, reduce cravings, and rebuild healthy routines. These tools help you stay grounded outside of the program.

Flexible Scheduling

Morning and evening IOP tracks mean you do not have to choose between treatment and your responsibilities. You can keep working, studying, or caring for your family while receiving consistent support. Our clinic is located in North Hollywood (91602), with quick freeway access via the 101 and 170, making it convenient for clients from Studio City, Valley Village, Van Nuys, Sherman Oaks, and across the greater Los Angeles area.

Insurance Support to Reduce Costs

We accept most major insurance plans. Our team checks your benefits, explains what is covered, and helps you understand what your costs will be before you start. For many clients, IOP is far more affordable than inpatient or residential treatment.

A Supportive Environment Focused on Long-Term Stability

Our goal is to help you feel safe, understood, and empowered, not rushed or overwhelmed. Clients often describe the program as a place where they finally feel heard and supported while they rebuild stability in their daily life.

Dual diagnosis IOP: treating mental health and substance use together

Most people who come to MindSpace are not dealing with just one thing. Substance use and mental health conditions are deeply connected, in many cases, one has been quietly driving the other for years.

Our IOP treats both simultaneously in one integrated plan, rather than addressing them separately. This is what dual diagnosis treatment means in practice.

Common combinations we treat together:

  • Alcohol or substance use with anxiety or depression
  • Opioid use with chronic pain and trauma
  • Stimulant use with ADHD or high-stress work environments
  • Marijuana use with anxiety, sleep disorders, or social avoidance

Personalized Treatment Plan

Your treatment plan outlines therapy sessions, group work, coping strategies, relapse-prevention goals, and milestones. It’s structured enough to keep you on track but flexible to fit your daily responsibilities.

Program Entry

You officially start the IOP. During your first week, you meet your therapists, join group sessions, and begin using program resources. Your care team checks in regularly to make sure you feel supported, comfortable, and confident.

A Typical Day in Our IOP

Morning track (example: 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM)

9:00 AM: Check-in and daily reflection. You start with a brief group check-in where each person shares how they are feeling and what they are working on that day. It sets the tone and builds accountability.

9:30 AM: Group therapy session. A clinician-led group focused on a specific skill or theme, emotional regulation, communication, stress management, or relapse prevention. You learn alongside peers who understand what you are going through.

10:45 AM: Short break.

11:00 AM: Individual therapy or skills workshop. On some days this is a one-on-one session with your primary therapist. On others it is a structured skills workshop covering tools like CBT techniques, mindfulness, or coping strategies you can use the same day.

11:45 AM: Wrap-up and planning. You close the session with a brief review of what you worked on and what you will focus on before the next session. Your care team checks in to make sure you feel grounded before you leave.

12:00 PM: You return to your day, work, school, family, or whatever comes next.

Evening track (example: 6:00 PM – 9:00 PM)

The evening track follows the same structure and is designed for people who work or study during the day. The content and clinical quality are identical, only the timing changes.

Outside of scheduled sessions, you continue your daily life while applying the skills you are building in treatment. That is what makes IOP different from residential care, you are practising recovery in the real world from day one, with clinical support available throughout.

Virtual IOP: Flexible Care from Home

This virtual intensive outpatient program is ideal for individuals who need structured therapy but cannot commit to full-time inpatient treatment. 85% of participants in online IOPs report measurable improvements in coping skills within the first 2 weeks.

You will engage in group therapy, individual counseling, and skill-building workshops focused on emotional regulation, stress management, and relapse prevention. The virtual IOP model delivers continuity of care, flexibility, and accessibility, allowing clients to prioritize their mental health while maintaining work, school, or family responsibilities.
