What Is Partial Hospitalization Program
A PHP is the most intensive level of outpatient care. You attend treatment 5 to 6 days per week, for around 5 to 6 hours each day, at our North Hollywood clinic, 10933 Camarillo St. (91602), accessible from Studio City, Toluca Lake, Valley Village, and across the San Fernando Valley.
PHP is not a hospital. You are not admitted to a ward, you do not stay overnight, and you are not in a locked unit. You come in during the day, receive structured clinical care, and go home to your own routine each evening.
It is designed for people who need more support than weekly therapy can offer, but whose situation does not require around-the-clock supervision. At MindSpace, your PHP includes individual therapy, group therapy, psychiatric care, medication management when needed, and practical skills you can use the same day you learn them.
Virtual PHP in California: Care Without the Commute
Not everyone is close enough to North Hollywood to attend in person, or able to manage the drive five to six days a week. That’s why MindSpace also offers PHP virtually, for clients located anywhere in California.
Virtual PHP includes the same structure as our in-person program, individual therapy, group therapy, psychiatric care, medication management, and skills-based sessions, delivered through a secure, HIPAA-compliant video platform. You log in from home, and the clinical team you’d see in person is the same team guiding your care online.
This option works well if you live outside the San Fernando Valley, don’t have reliable transportation, or simply need treatment to fit around a job, school, or caregiving responsibilities that make daily in-person visits difficult. It’s still PHP, the same hours, the same accountability, the same level of clinical oversight, just accessed from wherever you are.
Is PHP Right for You or Your Loved One?
Many people who enter PHP have been managing things on their own for a while. At some point, the effort required to keep functioning starts to outweigh the progress being made.
PHP may be the right level of care if you:
- Feel like symptoms are getting harder to manage despite therapy or medication
- Are finding it difficult to work, maintain relationships, or get through a normal day
- Have just been discharged from a hospital or residential programme and need continued daily support
- Have relapsed or feel close to it and need structure and clinical accountability
- Know that what you are doing is not enough, but are not sure what the next step looks like
If any of these feel familiar, you are not alone. PHP is designed for exactly this point in someone’s recovery.
PHP vs Other Levels of Care
| Level of Care | Schedule / Duration | Intensity | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Residential Treatment | 24/7 supervised care | Highest | Individuals needing medical detox, immediate safety, or intensive monitoring |
| Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) | 3–5 days/week, ~3 hours/day | Moderate | Structured care while maintaining work, school, or daily responsibilities |
| Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) | 3–5 days/week, ~6 hours/day | High | More intensive treatment, often a step-down from inpatient care |
| Standard Outpatient Therapy | Weekly sessions | Low | Ongoing maintenance; may not provide enough structure for persistent symptoms |

Therapies Used in Our PHP
Treatment varies based on each person’s diagnosis and goals. Sessions at MindSpace draw on a range of clinically proven approaches.
Individual therapy
One-on-one sessions with your primary therapist to address personal challenges, track your progress, and adjust your plan as your situation changes.
Group therapy
Daily facilitated groups where you build skills alongside peers. Group work develops perspective, accountability, and connection, all of which support recovery outside of the clinic.
Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT)
CBT helps you identify thought patterns and behaviours that are making things harder, and replace them with more effective ones. It is practical, structured, and produces results quickly.
Dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT)
DBT focuses on emotional regulation, distress tolerance, and managing relationships. Particularly effective for those who experience intense emotions or have a dual diagnosis.
Trauma-informed care
For clients with a trauma history, all sessions are delivered with a trauma-sensitive approach that prioritises safety and avoids re-traumatisation.
Family therapy
When clinically appropriate and with your consent, we involve family members to improve communication and build a stronger support system for your recovery.
Psychiatric care and medication management
If medication is part of your plan, our clinical team works with prescribers to ensure it is safely integrated with your therapy and monitored throughout the programme.
Holistic and wellness support
Mindfulness practice, stress management, and wellness tools are built into the programme to support mental and physical health alongside clinical treatment.

FAQs on Partial Hspitalization Program in LA
PHP Details
PHP provides the same level of clinical intensity as residential treatment—including daily therapy, psychiatric care, and comprehensive programming—but you return home each evening instead of staying overnight. This allows you to maintain connections with family, practice skills in real-world settings, and often continue working or attending school while receiving intensive care.
Most clients participate in PHP for 2-4 weeks, attending 5-6 days per week. The exact length depends on your individual progress, symptom stability, and treatment goals. Your care team assesses your readiness to step down to a lower level of care based on clinical markers, not arbitrary timelines.
If during your assessment or early in treatment we determine you need a higher level of care (like residential) or could be successful in a less intensive program (like IOP), we'll discuss options with you. Our goal is to match you with the right level of support, not to keep you in a program that doesn't fit your needs.
It depends on your schedule and the program track you're in. Our morning PHP runs earlier in the day, while our evening track accommodates people with daytime commitments. However, PHP requires 4-6 hours of daily attendance, so you'll need to adjust work or school schedules accordingly. Many clients take medical leave or work reduced hours during PHP.
Consistent attendance is essential for PHP-level care, as your treatment plan is designed around daily clinical contact. If you need to miss a session due to medical appointments or emergencies, let your care team know as soon as possible. Frequent absences may indicate that a different level of care is more appropriate, and we'll work with you to find the right fit.
Bring any prescribed medications (we'll store them securely), a notebook for journaling or notes, and a water bottle. Leave valuables at home. Dress comfortably, this is a clinical environment, not a formal setting. We provide lunch or breaks for meals depending on your program schedule.
Family and Support
Yes. You're assigned a primary therapist and psychiatrist who follow your progress throughout the program. This continuity allows your clinical team to adjust treatment in real time, build trust, and ensure you're working toward your specific recovery goals with people who know your story.
Yes, when appropriate and helpful to your recovery. We offer family therapy sessions, psychoeducation for loved ones, and communication skills work to help repair relationships and build healthy support systems. Your therapist will discuss family involvement during your treatment planning.
Admission and Start
Once we complete your clinical assessment and verify insurance authorization, most clients can begin PHP within 2-5 business days. In urgent situations, we work to expedite the process. The timeline depends on insurance approval and program availability.
No, you typically do not need a referral from a doctor or therapist to begin the Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) at MindSpace Recovery Center in Los Angeles. You can reach out directly to the admissions team to start the intake process, which includes a clinical assessment to determine appropriate care and to design a personalized treatment plan. While having a referral or recommendation from a healthcare provider can be helpful for insurance purposes or coordination of care, it is not a required step to contact MindSpace and begin the evaluation for PHP.
Our PHP program is based at 10933 Camarillo St., North Hollywood, CA 91602. We're located in the San Fernando Valley near the 101 and 170 freeways, making us accessible from North Hollywood (zip codes 91601, 91602, 91605, 91606), Valley Village, Valley Glen, Studio City, Toluca Lake, Burbank, and Sherman Oaks. Clients also travel from Hollywood and Los Feliz via the 101 corridor. If you're unsure whether the commute works for you, call us, we're happy to help you figure out logistics.
In most cases you can complete your intake assessment the same day you call. If medical detox is needed before starting PHP, that step comes first and typically takes three to seven days depending on the substance. From your first call to your first day in the program, the process is usually straightforward and moves as quickly as your situation allows.
You'll typically need a valid photo ID, your insurance card, a list of any current medications, and comfortable clothing appropriate for a full day of programming. Your admissions coordinator will give you a complete list specific to the program before your start date so you're not left guessing.
Insurance & Aftercare
As you stabilize and build skills, you'll transition to a lower level of support that matches your progress.
Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP): 3 hours/day, 3–5 days/week for continued structure with more flexibility.
Outpatient Therapy: Weekly individual or group therapy to maintain progress.
Psychiatric Follow-Up : Ongoing medication management and monitoring.
Most major insurance plans cover PHP as it's considered a medically necessary level of care for individuals with acute mental health or substance use needs. Our team verifies your benefits, handles prior authorization, and explains your out-of-pocket costs before you begin treatment. PHP is typically more affordable than residential care and covered at higher rates than standard outpatient therapy.
