What Is Virtual Intensive Outpatient Program

Virtual IOP (Intensive Outpatient Program) is structured addiction and mental health treatment delivered through live, secure video sessions instead of in-person visits. You’re not doing this alone from a laptop with pre-recorded content, you’re in real-time individual therapy and group sessions with licensed clinicians, several times a week, following the same clinical approach we use in our North Hollywood facility.

The format is different. The level of care isn’t. Virtual clients at MindSpace receive the same evidence-based therapies, the same dual diagnosis treatment for co-occurring mental health and substance use, and the same clinical oversight as clients who come in person, just without the commute, the time off work, or the need to explain a daily absence to your job or family.

Who Virtual IOP is For

Virtual IOP at MindSpace is available to adults anywhere in Los Angeles County, from North Hollywood and the San Fernando Valley to Los Angeles, Burbank, Glendale, and beyond. As long as you have a private space and a reliable internet connection, distance from our North Hollywood facility is never a barrier to getting care.

It works well if you’re managing a substance use or mental health condition that needs more structure than weekly therapy, but doesn’t require 24-hour supervision or medical detox. It’s often the right fit if you:

  • Are working, in school, or caring for family, and can’t step away for daily in-person treatment
  • Just completed detox or a higher level of care and need a structured next step
  • Have tried outpatient therapy before and found once-a-week sessions weren’t enough
  • Are managing anxiety, depression, or trauma alongside substance use
  • Live outside easy driving distance of North Hollywood, or don’t have reliable transportation
  • Want treatment you can attend without disrupting your daily routine or explaining an absence

When In-Person or a Higher Level of Care May Be a Better Starting Point

Virtual IOP isn’t the right fit for everyone clinically, and we’ll tell you that honestly during your assessment. It may not be the best starting point if you:

  • Are currently withdrawing from alcohol, benzodiazepines, or opioids and need medically supervised detox first
  • Need daily in-person structure or 24-hour monitoring
  • Are at elevated risk of self-harm and would benefit from a higher level of clinical support
  • Don’t have a private, reliable space to attend sessions

Advantages of Virtual IOP

No Commute

Sessions happen from home, so the hour you'd spend driving to and from North Hollywood goes back into your day.

Keep your routine intact

Work, school, and family responsibilities stay in place. You attend treatment around them instead of pausing your life for it.

Access regardless of location

If you're anywhere in LA or in another city in California and can't easily get to North Hollywood, virtual removes that barrier completely.

A familiar environment

Some clients open up more easily from their own space than they would in a clinical office, especially early in treatment.

92% of clients report improved coping skills after completing our program.

Therapies Available with Virtual IOP in LA

Every Virtual IOP plan at MindSpace is delivered through live video, not pre-recorded content or self-guided modules. You’re in real time with your therapist and your group, the same as you would be in our clinic.

Individual therapy

One on one video sessions with your primary therapist. Because it’s from your own space, many clients find it easier to speak openly here than they expected, without the drive in or the waiting room beforehand.

Live video groups with a set of peers you see consistently over the course of the program, not a rotating drop in format. Cameras on, real conversation, the same accountability you’d get in person.

Delivered live in your group sessions, with materials shared on screen. You can revisit what’s covered since sessions are structured around a written curriculum, not a one time talk.

Some clients process trauma more openly from a familiar, private space than they would in a clinical office. Your therapist adjusts pacing accordingly, whether that helps or whether it means going slower to check you’re actually safe and grounded at home.

Family members join sessions remotely from wherever they are, which often makes it easier to get everyone in the room.

Psychiatric appointments happen over video on the same secure platform as your therapy sessions. No separate portal, no extra login, no additional trip.

Practiced in the same environment where you’ll actually use them. Stress management and routine building land differently when you’re working through them at your own desk or kitchen table, not in a therapy office you leave behind after the session ends.

Built around your actual home environment and daily routine, since that’s where you’ll be practicing it. Your therapist can talk through specific rooms, situations, and people in your life in a way an in-person session removed from your home can’t.

Requirements for Virtual IOP

Joining sessions from home only works if a few basics are in place first. Here’s what you’ll need before your first session.

A private space

A room where you can close the door and speak freely for the length of a session, without someone walking in or overhearing. This matters most in group therapy, where confidentiality goes both ways.

A device with camera and microphone

A smartphone, tablet, or computer works. Cameras stay on during sessions, since that’s how your therapist and group actually connect with you, not just hear you.

A stable internet connection

Sessions run several hours a day, so a connection that can hold a video call that long without dropping matters more here than it would for a quick check in call.

Consistent attendance

Virtual IOP still requires showing up on schedule, camera on, for the full session. The flexibility is in not having to commute, not in treating sessions as optional

FAQs on Virtual IOP

If your clinician determines you need more support than virtual IOP can provide, we don't just refer you out. We transition you into our PHP or in-person program directly, with the same team, so there's no gap in care and no starting over with a new provider.

Yes. You're matched with a primary therapist at intake who stays with you through the program, so you're not repeating your history to a new clinician every few weeks.

We offer self-pay rates and can walk you through what a full program costs upfront, with no hidden fees added later. Ask during your initial call and we'll give you exact numbers before you commit to anything.

One missed session isn't the end of your program, your therapist will help you make it up or adjust your schedule. Consistent, repeated absences are addressed directly, since attendance is part of what makes the program work.

Groups are kept small and consistent, the same set of peers each week, not a rotating drop in format. This is intentional, since real accountability comes from people who know your situation, not strangers each time.

Yes. If you start virtual and want to shift to in-person sessions, or the reverse, that's a conversation with your clinician, not a new intake process, since you're staying within the same team either way.
